Bathing or taking a shower can be common difficulty for older people or people with limited mobility. It can be a very daunting task for some, the fear of falling and injury can mean that they will do almost anything to avoid having a bath or shower.
For caregivers, it can be concerning whether the elderly person in their care is not washing frequently enough. After all it is all part of our well being and part of a care routine.
How often do elderly people need to take a bath or shower?
Taking a bath or shower is recommended at least twice a week, this will help to avoid skin breakdowns and infections.
The good news is that whilst you or I might need to bathe or shower every day, elderly people do not need to shower every day. A ‘wipe down’ with a warm wash cloth will be might be sufficient in keeping clean and minimising body odour in between baths or showers.
Elderly people tend to have dry skin and their skin is delicate and could be prone to getting sore, and worse still, infection. The same goes for their hair. If washing their hair is a stressful and awkward job then they could always use dry shampoo to help prolong the time between washes. If you care for someone the NHS UK advises at least twice a week for a bath or shower.
